ST TRINIAN’S - Opening Scene

St Trinian’s

The first we see is how produced and who distributed the film with al their logos. We know it has been funded by the National Lottery and it be Ealing Studios, UK film council and Entertainment Film where the distributors of this film.

Then we see this shocking pink colour and from this we know the film will be quite girly and most of the actor may be all girls. From even seeing the film title St Trinian’s it seem quite girly and posh too.

The colour pink and black are mainly used just for the introduction and we get the feeling the theme is quite punky and rock chick, we knows punk for being violent and the little images resembles people being violent to one another this add anchorage to the shots.

The text of the titles of the film seems quite old Victorian stencil print text,

There is edit and zooms in into a burning car  which add more violence and this makes the viewers think there will be violence in this film , so one theme crime and violence liked to the younger generation.

A girl who well presented, quite posh is disturbed by the site of the car and it seems as though she does not fit in this place. Tracking is used to follow the continuation and this also helps the viewer follow the actions and shows that not just the car but viewers are heading to same destination but is unsure and unaware to expect of just like the girl in the car. The first few characters that are shown in the opening scene tend to be one or the other main character through out the film.

A pan is used to show the car driving inside the woods it seems quite enclosed and the girl may be represented as to feeling quite trap and does not belong here, just a long winded  road and never ending.

You see a low angle point of view of the whole school and this makes viewers seems quite intimating and not a very nice place to be at especially for new girls who are joining the school. Tracking is used to follow the car and see the action.

We get the feeling the girls in the school miss behave quite a lot especially when we see the table falling out of the window behind them. The Dad over looks and still wants the daughter to go to this school. This is another situation that hits the younger generation … parents not listening to teenager and doing what they think is best for their child. Even though the child does not want to do it so being forced into things they don’t feel right about or being pressurise into things.

The setting of the characters has been positioned and centred not randomly the main two characters Troy and Gabriella are in the middle while the other characters go boy girl boy. They are wearing all summer clothes and the background resembles the texture of a swimming pool maybe hints they are on summer vacation or break away from school

Sound
High School is a Musical so there was a lot of diegetic sound, so music, singing and dancing through out the movie.

The pace and rhythm generally through out the movie is quite slow but the build up the pace before a song start. The pace and rhythm of the film become a bit more fast paced. They all seem like can not wait until their vacation starts but they still are stressing about not finding a job. But they still keep their hope saying they will still do the things they do in the free time like going to the cinema and skate

Genre and Audience Presentation

What Production Company?
We have chosen to use the American production company of Paramount Pictures. It is one of the most grossing movie studios and is in fact America’s oldest existing movie studio.

Why are they suitable?
This company is suitable because are known for producing quirky films and have produced a wide range of films in different genres.  After knowing that they are the oldest existing movie studios, this shows that they must be good at what they do, therefore it shows that we have made the right decision in choosing them as our production company.

What other films have they successfully produced?
They have produced Angus Thongs and perfect Snogging (another British Film), and Stardust, which were hugely successful, Mean Girls, Napoleon Dynamite and School Of Rock.

Why is that significant for your film?
These films are significant to us because they have the codes and convention of a quirky Teen Rom/Com genre that will attract our audience to come and watch our film. We have actually research a few of these films whilst doing our analysis, this shows that the genre that we are looking towards doing is a good genre that Paramount Pictures might take on.

What distribution company?
We have chosen to use the distributor company of Paramount Pictures. This is the same as the company chosen for our production.

It is part of a vertically integrated organisation?
Yes it is part of a vertically integrated organisation, which we have used for the production company. The distribution part of the company was in partnership with Universal studios for 25 years and this was originally how the films distributed internationally however it is now an independent company within itself.

Why is that significant?
This is significant because we are then able to make more of a profit because all the revenue from the films success is going back in the company itself.  This means that we don’t have to worry about payments to lots of different companies and people separated from this company, therefore it is easier to split money into shares and we will gain more as we don’t have lots of companies wanting the same amount.

If you are choosing an independent company, why?
We are not using a independent company because all though it would be slightly be beneficial we believe that using a vertically integrated organisation we will be able to get a wider audience because they will able to sell more of the film because cinemas are familiar with this company.

What other films have they distributed?
The films that they have distributed are Footloose, Series of Unfortunate Events, Save The Last Dance and Mean Girls.

How does that tie in well with your film?
These films are all quirky Teen Rom/Com’s those are the films that we accept some of our target audience to have seen (at least one of them). Therefore it shows that using this distributor is the right choice as they have distributed many film of our genre. As our research includes similar codes and conventions to these films we are able to know that our idea for our film will sell well because it is a popular genre in the type of films that Paramount Pictures sell to the audience. This is what the audience expect to see particularly in this genre from Paramount Pictures.

Freaky Friday - Film

Themes that occur in Freaky Friday

Falling in Love
Hate / Clashes with other peers
Parents and Guardians – Major (Mother)
Family commitments
Family (Annoying Little Brother) – very stereotypical
Band/ (Indie)
Studying – Detention
Rebel Student
Typical teenager

Freaky Friday is film that shows the typical teenager and what they go through every day. From home to high school it shows different elements and how a teenager tackles each problem that comes up. Anna (Lindsay Lohan) the typical teenager wants  to lead her life the way she wants and she tends to clash with her Mother every time she wants to do something, he little brother does not help with the situation either. She is not the typical student either she keep on getting detention and fails in essays.

Costume

Anna – she mainly wears black and red, this colour connote dark, powerful, not trust worthy and dangerous. But the colour she wears contradicts as person her self as her Mother over rules her and her Mother has more power then she has. So maybe the colour she wears are trying to show she is powerful but really deep inside she is not. She got look of an indie/rock chick and this also links to the idea she is in a band her self and she plays the guitar (very stereotypical).

Anna Mother – she is busy person generally, she tries to balance work life and also he home life. Through out the film she dresses smart and also at home this may link to idea she bring work home to and she never has break from work life. As she is councillor she tries and helps people deal with their problems. She tries and interferes in Anna life and tries to help her deal with her problems. This is another element that happens parents try and understand with their young adult problems. But they do not understand how to deal and resolve the problems and this can create more arguments and misunderstanding between the adult and the teenager,

Grease - Film

Themes that occur in Grease

-          Love
-          Jealousy
-          Pregnancy
-          Studies
-          Cars
-          Fights
-          Peer pressure
-          Groups/ Clashes

Just by seeing the cover you can tell the film is going to be about a couple falling in love or in love. They seem a couple from the younger generation. They have quite a deep and close relationship and we can tell this from their gesture and the posture.

Costume

Danny – He wears black leather jacket, black trousers and a black tee shirt. The black may connote dark, strong, bold, not trust worthy, dangerous, brave and quite masculine. Danny has a quite a tough character, he has no weaknesses and he the leader of one of the main gangs (T-birds). Everyone looks up to him and he has a lot of girls after him, which makes his ego much bigger. He is a different person when he is with his friends and when he is on his own. This is another factor that the young generation goes through. For young male’s ego and trying to be all hard and putting an act can affect lots of people. In this case the girl he loved Sandy he hurts her and he tries and show his mates he someone else just to impress his gang the T-Birds.

Sandy – She wears skirts and summery dresses which is quite girly the colours of the clothes are bright, white and pure which represents pureness in her self. She ties her hair up similar to a young girl. The clothes she wears are quite long and not much of her skin is showing, she even wears frilly socks, this may represent childlike. Through her costume and her hair she seems innocent and pure.  Sandy is completely the opposite from Danny. She is much more caring, she is quite emotional person and can get persuaded easily by others (peer pressure). She has been pampered so much and she does not know the real outside world. So when things get hard she can get affected very easily quickly. She does not have a strong character as much as Danny has. She is more inferior and more intimidating compared to Danny. Here we can see the dominant ideology and who is dominating in the film the most.

Sound
As Grease is a musical there are many parts though out the film where they sing and dance. This may attract more of a younger generation to come and see this film.  There is catchy beats through out the film and memorable song and lyrics. There is a lot of diegetic sound where the groups of friend sing along and dance together.

Camera shots/ Camera Movements
There are mainly long shots used in the film. As there are so many main important characters and they mainly stay in big groups and also this also helps set the setting and see the whole atmosphere in the frame. Close up have been used to show expression this helps the audience connect more with the actor from the film.
Tracking has been used when they have a car race this helps the audience flow the action.

10 Things I Hate About You - Opening Scene

10 Things I Hate About You

The opening Scene (2 minutes)

We first here non- diegetic sound rock music this could connote the theme and what the film type cold be emo/ indie. This also helps the camera shots flow together then be shot coming together bit by bit.  The name of the production come up too Touchstone Pictures this logo is more formal.

We see the Touchstone picture again in the after shot, the way this is presented is more teenage style, informal, scruffy and the colour green this could be done to attract more teenagers towards the film. The green text really stands our from the background colour black, this could connote to show teenagers are bright and bold and they stand out.

The first few shots are quite artistic and sketchy as we see a sketch it’s from a birds eye view this could show the main setting where the film going to take place in.

You see the title of the screen 10 Things I Hate About You in the informal and teenage style – sketchy style.

From this you see a pan shot of the area the film going to place in.

You see the names of the actors in the sketchy and informal style in different colours not just the colour white or black this could represents each person being different in they own way.

You see some of the areas and part of the street it seems neat and tidy so the film setting might take place in a good neat area not in a gritty and poor area. This could link the characters and what they going o be like stereotypes.

The Non- diegetic sound becomes diegetic sound in the film where there car full of girls listening to the music. This is become very stereotypical and shows teenagers being loud. The first car full of girl’s shows that they care about they looks and they look quite well represented. Now day if girls are good looking they tend to be more popular and have more friends. While in the other car there is only one girl in the girl… who does not care about her looks … so not that popular with other people. The diegetic sound from the second girl car represents as the song says I don’t care about my reputation and it just represents her so well. She does not care what other people think. The girls look down on her as if she does not belong in the area but she does not care. This is one of themes that tend to be seen on teen rom/com girls clashing with one another and who is better?

We see a shot of boys playing hockey and this could be represent hockey is not for girls. Patriarchy is seen here. They are not wearing any safety gear this could represent teenagers as to break rules and they don’t care about rules from you can see the film is set in place where students study.

The clothes and cars are bit back dated and the colours or the lighting are not bright it’s quite dull and boring the building look ancient and old. You see a mid shot of the building this helps us see the setting where the film is going to place and you the film based around students.

You see the same girl from the second car this may help the audience think she is one of the main character… a tracking shot is being used here to see and follow the action. You see one of the teachers talking to a student think help us understand the age range set for the film. You can also see the gesture and posture of the student and teacher. How the student seems quite intimated by the teacher talking to him.

Mainly straight cuts have been used.

Grease - Opening Scene

Grease

Everything in the opening scene is in cartoon and animation form, this could connote teenagers being referred as children and not as adults. There is non-diegetic sound and this adds more anchorage to the shots. The non- diegetic sound consists of the film title Grease. This may be used to make the film more memorable and make the audience remember the film much better. The first shot we see is the music player which moves to the beat of the non-diegetic sound in the background. The main clue that he is from a young generation is that the diegetic sound from the radio the man saying it’s the first day of school …

The next shot is of the young adult is getting out of bed. Just by looking at the state of his bed room you can tell he is messy. Young adults (men) tend to be very messy and they are mainly represented this way. Another way you can tell he seems quite young is that there is tie and shirt on the side of his bed which tells the audience his from a young generation. He makes quite a lot of mess in the bathroom and just pushing the things on the sink until they fall off and does not seen to bothered to pick them up. He just cares about his looks especially his hair. Through the opening scene they introduce the main characters but the carton version of them. By doing this I think this interacts much better with the younger generation as viewers of the movie. The writing of the text or the actors name and who and what role they play as is quite informal this appeals to the wider and younger generation who is most likely come to see the movie.

Then there are short clips of what the young generation are most likely to do, go out, dance, go to parties, go to music concerts, listen to music and do they own hobbies.

Then we go to the girl bedroom which completely opposite from the young man room. Its much cleaner, tidier and more refreshing look… this is how girls are represented as neat and tidy people. The room is also quite girly and floral unlike the young man room messy, junky and greasy. She is quite pretty, thin and blonde girls… many girls tend to want to have the perfect figure and be represented this way. Another theme introduced to teen films.

There is another set of short clips as Grease was out in the early 80’s it shows what was happing in Britain at that time of year. This helps us understand and also represents British people and what the young generation was going through.

We see the other characters as well and we repeatedly see a prop in the background the flag or logo with Rydell written on it. This helps the audience to link all these characters together and is also helps the storyline flow together. In every shot or scene we a see a character they are some how linked to one another.

Straight cuts have been used through out the opening scene.

Camp Rock - Opening Scene

Camp Rock

We first see a mid shot of a house and this sets the setting who we know where the next shot if going to come from not just straight into the house and this helps the audience to flow much better into the film. We know she is student as when her mum calls her to wake up she says “last day of school”.

We see a young female adult walking up from her bed she seems quite young so we know she is some kind of student. When she walks towards her mirror we see a clear view/shot of the setting of her bedroom. From this we can already have idea what this young female might be like. She seems quite girly but also quite indie hence the diegetic sound and also the guitar on her bedroom floor.

Before she does anything else she goes straight to the mirror and tries different hair styles on her. This is another theme that most females from a younger generation seem to most likely to think about. She tries on different outfits, the outfits that she tries does not feel right on her as viewers we see that as well. Nowadays female from the young generation tries to change themselves for many reasons, to be more popular, try and fit in the crowd, not someone who stands out,  make friends and just try and be someone else when they are really not that person…!

You can tell she is really into music … music is one of the themes or iconography of films or even the younger generation. Music can be controlling in so many different ways and mainly the young generation really connect through music in many different ways. You can tell her hobby is singing and playing instruments i.e. the guitar and key board.

The young generation can get influenced by media and they watch it quite frequently and want to know what’s happening especially with famous people.

High School Musical 2 - Opening Scene

High School Musical

The opening scene (2 minutes)

The camera zooms out from the clock

Introduction to the actual school/ building – the outside surroundings

Name of the school, flags, logo of the school… colour scheme (red)

Name of the film (Disney High School Musical 2)

We see the inside of the school…i.e.… canteen …basket ball court… drama studio or stage … the corridors of the school (lockers)  where the main parts and action takes place or even to recap from the first movie High School Musical. Looking at all these parts of the school gives you a feeling that the film is about students from school just by looking at the setting and not even seeing any of the characters.

At the bottom there are small credits of the actor’s names that have taken part of the film.

A camera shot from outside the classroom but from the outside of the doors moving towards the inside of the classroom.

You can see the clock repeatedly … so time means a lot in the opening scene.

Clothes – no uniform, casual and modern clothing but sensible to … all look like good students no piercing or bright and luminous colours worn.

Props – Corbin bleu holding a basket ball – shows his hobby is basket ball and also links to the setting shown before the basket ball court. This could suggest his part of the basket ball team.

There is only one student with papers and book over the desk this may connote she is good student and more into her studies more then others.

Gesture and posture – all bored waiting for the summer holiday to start,

We see a part when Zac Effron looking and Gabriela … this could show the main two characters the introduction to them … or they have a main part of the film. This could also show they share good relationship… maybe hint more then friends.

Everyone waiting for summer to start... the pace and the rhythm of the opening scene gets faster towards the end…may shows something big or start of something going happen.

The camera shots and movement
There more close-ups of the man character in the film… so the group of friendship that involves the characters. This could introduce characters in the film. Mainly straight cuts are used in the movie this could show more verisimilitude and realism.
